Thank you for the huge amount of positive feedback on our development!
There are a lot of questions about the description of this small RAS. We will try to answer all.
1) Why is it called modular?
Modularity is an approach to the organization of production that helps to effectively use the available tools and resources of the system. Thanks to this approach, the farmer has the opportunity to plan and regulate production volumes, respond quickly to market demands, adapt the system to the cultivation of different species of fish.
2) What does this system (RAS) consist of?
The fry module consists of 4 baths of 750 liters, a biofilter, a 55 W UV sterilizer, a pump with a power controller, an 8 kW heat exchanger, and a temperature controller.
The main system for commercial fish farming consists of the following modules: mechanical water purification module (Vismar Ecodrum 50 drum filter – up to 60 m3 / h), biofilter module (20 m3 with 10 m3 of biological filling), aeration module (500 l / min), water heating module (30 kW heat exchanger, solenoid valve for temperature controller), cultivation module (4 pools of 15 m3) and pump group (2 pumps of 25 m3 / h).
3) How is the system heated?
A 30 kW fan heater is installed in the room to heat the air, and the water in the system is heated by a water heating module. Thermal energy is produced by a fuel module on wood pellets.
4) What is the energy consumption?
The maximum power consumption of this system reaches 1.8 kW per hour.
5) What is the performance of this system?
This farm is designed to grow 4,000 kg of clary catfish per month, which is about 48 tons of fish per year. Each month, the fry module is stocked with 5,000 fry, which are reared there for 1 month. After that, this batch is released into the pool with a volume of 15 m3, where it is grown for another 5-6 months to commercial weight. In the near future we plan to add 2 pools of 15 m3, which will increase fish productivity.
6) How will the sale of grown products?
The owner of the farm already has a preliminary agreement with the retail chain on the wholesale sale of farmed fish.
7) What is the profitability of this farm?
The cost of RAS (excluding premises and communications) is UAH 750,000 turnkey. The cost of premises and communications (160 sq.m. of a warm building, thermal energy of at least 20 kW depending on the type of heat loss of the building) may be another UAH 300,000. Another 150,000 hryvnias are needed as working capital. The total investment is 1.2 million hryvnias (40,000 euros). With the cost of products in 33-34 hryvnia and wholesale sales of 48-50, the annual profit can be about 700,000 hryvnia per year.
8) Why Claria catfish?
First, it is a fish that can be grown with a very dense planting (up to 300 kg per 1 m3).
Secondly, we use fry grown in Ukraine and feed them feed produced in Ukraine, which significantly reduces the cost.
Third, clary catfish is a great fish for beginners because it forgives many mistakes. And finally, the fish is very tasty, boneless, grows quickly.
We are currently looking for premises to house a catfish farm of at least 200 tons per year. We will process part of this amount of fish into fillets, as well as produce delicious fished fish in vacuum packaging.
