The State Fisheries Agency initiated the creation of Ukraine’s first practical manual on farm fish breeding “Modern aquaculture: from theory to practice”. Its authors were scientists and entrepreneurs in the fishing industry.

The manual consists of 20 chapters and describes all the components of this type of business: from finding a reservoir to the features of breeding different types of fish and corresponding business plans. “The idea to create a practical guide arose from communication with fish farmers. In their opinion, lack of knowledge is one of the biggest problems of modern aquaculture in Ukraine. It was said that many people would like to rent a pond and grow fish in it, but they have no idea how to do it: how to draw up documents, what profitability to expect, what features this or that type of fish has. We have prepared this guide and made it available for free. Anyone who wants to can start with it, use it as a road map in fish farming,” said the head of the State Fisheries Agency, Yarema Kovaliv.
The guide contains information on the cultivation of traditional Ukrainian aquaculture objects in fish farms – carp, white and variegated carp, white carp, black carp, crucian carp, tench, paddlefish, pike, European catfish, as well as promising types of fish that can be business objects: sturgeon, tilapia, trout, clary catfish, barramundi, eel, jade perch. The guide also provides information on production prospects in the conditions of shellfish and shrimp aquaculture.
“The main task of this guide is to provide primary information for an aquaculture beginner. Aquaculture is not scary. This is, most likely, a very interesting and dynamic business that anyone can engage in,” commented the co-author of the guide Lyubomir Haydamaka.
The book describes the technological aspects of aquaculture in the main directions: pond aquaculture, industrial (garden and fish farming in recirculating aquaculture systems), mariculture, recreational aquaculture. The technological aspects of the cultivation of new promising aquaculture objects are presented and the basics of selection and breeding work are revealed. Attention is paid to the information and analytical provision of the system of forecast and program documents for the development of the industry in the context of global transformation processes. Proposals for detection, treatment and prevention of major fish diseases have been systematized.
Co-author of the guide, Director of the Methodological and Technological Center for Aquaculture Yuriy Sharylo noted: “We prepared this guide primarily for small and medium-sized farmers, for family businesses. The handbook highlights the mechanism of fisheries policy formation in the conditions of economic globalization. It is shown that today aquaculture is a modern integrated multifunctional sector of agricultural production that effectively uses water, land, fish, labor and other resources.
