And again, for the first time in Ukraine, we present a farm for growing white-legged Pacific shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, which is sold in our supermarkets under the name vannamei shrimp. The very first project is called “Shrimp-5”, which makes it possible to grow delicious fresh shrimp in quantities of just over 5,000 kg per year.
To grow this type of shrimp, salted water (min. 10 g/l) is used. This shrimp is considered a marine species, but the larvae and juveniles of this species grow in estuaries, mangrove forests, where the salinity of the water is much less than in the open sea. And the adult specimens move to the ocean, where they mate, lay eggs, and the microscopic nauplii (larvae) of the shrimp wash ashore again.
There is an opinion that raising shrimp is a very difficult task. Indeed it is. But this was associated with the cultivation of freshwater shrimp Rosenberg’s macrobrachium, which for a number of reasons (improper feeding, sorting) is characterized by a high level of cannibalism, and scientists simply could not find ways to solve this issue.
B In this case, we propose to grow the completely peaceful Vannamei sea shrimp, the culture of which allows you to get from 12 to 20 kg of live weight per 1 sq.m. per year.

Growing shrimp is carried out in pools with warm water (26-28C) using special biofloc technology. Briefly about this technology, in the process of enhanced aeration, the presence of a certain amount of nitrogen and hydrocarbons (proteins and carbohydrates), a biologically active suspension (activated sludge) or biofloc appears as a result of the vital activity of shrimp. Biofloc is a biocenosis of zoogenic accumulations (colonies) of bacteria and protozoaorganisms that are involved in processing the breakdown products of proteins and carbohydrates. During the process, these accumulations flocculate into flakes, which is why this suspension is called biofloc.
The growing process does not require draining the contaminated water; the prepared water is added as it evaporates. Those. water is used again and again, which makes it possible to save on this resource.
The system has a special filter-flotator, with which we can control the level of biofloc in the water (no more than 20 mg/liter), otherwise the gills of the shrimp will become clogged and the farmer will suffer losses.
The “Shrimp-5” project gives you the opportunity to grow fresh, not frozen shrimp almost anywhere.
We started installing a greenhouse and building the first module for growing shrimp in Ukraine. Follow the news on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/vismaraqua/. Regarding financial participation in this project, please contact Lyubomir Gaidamaka.
The module consists of 4 pools 4 by 22 meters, 4 settling filters, 4 flotators, pumps, compressors, sprayers, pipes, oxygen generator, controller for dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, etc.
Some numbers:
- capital costs for construction and project – 80,000 Euro (polyethylene greenhouse 500 sq.m., collapsible insulated pools, heating, etc.)
- equipment – 40,000 Euro
- average electricity consumption – 5KW (220V)
- product growing cycle – 100-120 days
- amount of feed per year – 9,000 kg
- oxygen generator – 2.7 kg per hour
- water exchange rate – 3 m3/hour
- cost of growing 1 kg of shrimp weighing from 22 to 25 grams (40 pieces per kg) – 15.00 Euro
- retail price per kg – 40 Euro (Europe), USA – 40 dollars
- service personnel – 1 person
- profitability level (wholesale sales) – 27% per annum
- the cost of the larva is 40 dollars per 1000 pieces, min. order – 100,000.
With proper management, this project makes it possible to increase the amount of shrimp grown to 7-9 tons per year and obtain 3.5-3.8 harvests per year.
The cost of implementing this turnkey project is 120,000 Euro (excluding land work), which includes construction work, materials, equipment, installation, launch and etc.
To install additional equipment (compressor, oxygen generator, etc.) you will need one 40-foot container. The area of the growing area is 600 sq.m. Plus, heating of the water is necessary.
This project is ideal for small family restaurants and cafes, where you can sell grown shrimp at a good margin, which can significantly increase the level of profitability (up to 60%).
